New Interventions at the University Clinic for Urology: Penile Prostheses and Urethral Sphincters

The University Clinic for Urology in Skopje has introduced two innovative procedures: implantation of penile prostheses and urethral sphincters. The team led by Dr Ognen Ivanovski and Dr Bashkim Shabani, with the support of mentor Dr Marcel Rad, successfully performed three penile prosthesis operations. Previously, the clinic began implanting urethral sphincters in patients with urinary incontinence.

These procedures are most often intended for patients who have undergone major prostate cancer surgery, which causes erectile dysfunction or loss of urinary control.

The introduction of these procedures is supported by the Health Insurance Fund, which provided conditional financing to meet annual needs.

These interventions have a dual objective:

• Improving quality of life by addressing functional disorders in patients.
• Reducing the fear of losing erectile function and urinary control, which often leads to postponement of operations and delayed treatment of prostate cancer.
