Response to Claims of a Shortage of Oncology Medicines

The Health Insurance Fund responds to claims published on social media and in the media about an alleged shortage of medicines for cancer treatment. In order to clarify the situation, the Fund informs the public about the current situation regarding the availability of these medicines.

Generic medicines on the Positive B List (hospital list)

Paclitaxel and Cisplatin are in short supply

Paclitaxel: This medicine was in short supply for a short time due to non-delivery by the manufacturer. It is now available at the Oncology Clinic and is fully reimbursed by the Fund. Patients who purchased the medicine with their own funds may submit a reimbursement request to the Fund. The retail price of the medicine is 2.165 denars.

Cisplatin: The medicine is currently in short supply due to the absence of an offer in the public procurement procedure, although two registered forms exist. Carboplatin is available as a substitute. The Oncology Clinic repeated the tender, after which an offer was received, and delivery is expected in the coming days.

Nab-Paclitaxel and Octreotide: These medicines have been in longer-term short supply, including Octreotide (brand name Sandostatin), which has been missing for around two years due to a lack of interest from suppliers. Nevertheless, these medicines are reimbursed by the Fund. The Oncology Clinic has an active public call and is awaiting delivery.

Innovative biological therapy

We confirm that the biological therapy provided for under the conditional budget of the Oncology Clinic is available to patients.

Positive A List (pharmacy)

Letrozole and anastrozole have been transferred to the Positive A List since the summer of 2025 and are available in pharmacies across the country without interruption. These are generic medicines, of which four brands are registered in Macedonia.
